• As part of a master's thesis, potato cultivation was investigated under practical conditions. The aim of the thesis was to analyze the influence of varieties, seed rates, and biostimulants on yield, quality, and economic efficiency. A particular focus was on the use of karrikin, a biological plant aid derived from bamboo.

The results provide valuable insights into how karrikin can contribute to stabilizing stands and improving economic efficiency in potato cultivation.

  • What is Karrikin?

Karrikin is a purely organic plant adjuvant obtained by distilling bamboo. Its mechanism of action is based on natural processes occurring after forest fires, where smoke signals activate plant growth and regeneration mechanisms.

Karrikin is neither a fertilizer nor a pesticide. It works exclusively by activating the plant's own processes in the soil and within the plant.

How karrikin works in the experiment

In the experiment, karrikin was applied in combination with the humic acid-based product Bagira. The application was performed twice during the growing season with 1 l/ha each time.

According to the Master's thesis, karrikin is said to have the following effects:

  • Stimulation of plant growth
  • Improvement of nutrient uptake and nutrient utilization
  • Increase in resistance to abiotic stress such as heat, drought and hail
  • Promotion of soil life and enzyme activity
  • Activation of plant defense mechanisms

Observed Benefit of Karrikin in Experiment

  • Improved Plant Vitality under Stress

During the trial year, several stress events occurred, such as frost, hail, and heat waves. The plots treated with karrikin showed significantly faster regeneration after hail events and overall more vigorous stands compared to untreated variants.

These observations indicate that karrikin positively influenced the stress resistance of the potato plants.

  • Positive effects on growth and stock development

In combination with Bagira, the use of Karrikin led to:

    • faster row closure
    • more vigorous foliage growth
    • more homogeneous stands during critical development phases

Fast row closure is particularly relevant as it increases competitiveness against weeds and improves the plants' photosynthetic performance.

  • Yield and sorting advantages

The yield evaluation of the master's thesis shows:

    • Additional yields of up to 5 to 6 percent compared to untreated plots
    • A significant shift towards larger calibers over 50 mm
    • A higher market value of the harvest, even if the total yield did not always increase significantly

Especially for French fry production, the proportion of large-caliber tubers is crucial. Karrikin was able to indirectly contribute to a more economically attractive sorting here.

  • Economic benefit

Despite the comparatively high cost of karrikin at around 45 Euros per liter, the trial showed:

    • an increase in contribution margin per hectare
    • an additional revenue of several hundred Euros per hectare in individual variants
    • this without additional labor or machine expenditure

The study concludes that the use of karrikin was economically viable under the given conditions, especially with a sufficient producer price.

What limitations have you experienced?

An expected effect, the repellent effect on the Colorado potato beetle, could not be confirmed in the trial. There were no significant differences between treated and untreated plots.

The benefit of karrikin thus clearly lies in plant strengthening and not in direct pest control.

Overall Conclusion on Karrikin

The master's thesis shows that karrikin:

  • is particularly effective as a plant strengthener under stress conditions
  • indirectly contributes to higher yield stability and better sorting
  • is particularly effective in combination with humic acid-based products like Bagira
  • can be used economically and meaningfully under practical conditions

The author generally rates karrikin positively, but recommends a reduced application rate of 0.5 l/ha for practical use and further trials to confirm and fine-tune the results.
